Skills Development at City College Plymouth

Skills Development at City College Plymouth is for school leaving students with Special Education Needs/Disabilities as documented in their EHCP. We currently have c150 students, supported by 70 members of staff.

We have a variety of courses, and we assess each student to ensure Skills Development is the correct pathway for them. We liaise with schools who provide student’s EHCP information and predicted English and Maths levels. If Skills Development may be an appropriate option for them, students are invited to participate in taster sessions, normally around February, where further assessments take place to ensure that students are offered, if appropriate, the correct course and we can meet their EHCP needs.

Our classes are small, normally around 8 students and supported with a Tutor and between 2-4 Support staff (however this will depend on the needs of the group and will be staffed accordingly).

Our courses are from Entry Level 1 through to Level 1 in Employability and Independence Skills. This is run through two awarding bodies, City and Guilds and OCN. Functional skills English and Maths are delivered from pre-entry through to Level 2 .

Our courses also cover:

Independent Living Skills which includes cooking, personal care, internet safety, accessing the community, budgeting, healthy living etc., all to continue to build on their Independence as they move towards adulthood.

Personal Development would include a variety of activities to increase their social skills and confidence, including swimming, kayaking, sailing, music, arts & crafts, gym sessions, moor walking, conservation activities, Ten Tors, Duke of Edinburgh award etc. We also have a Skills Development football team.

We offer vocational sessions where students can use the college facilities, with support from our staff, in areas such as catering, automotive, media, construction, hairdressing, engineering and horticulture to show them different options that they may choose to move into after Skills Development.

All students are offered, when they are ready, a work placement and learn work skills to prepare them to move onto another course or employment if appropriate.

For older students aged 19+ we have a part time course over 2 days. They would also complete the Employability qualification.
